The menopause means the last menstrual period. It is the permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from the loss of ovarian follicular activity. 

Natural menopause is recognized to have occurred after 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea (no periods), for which there is no other obvious pathological or physiological cause.  

 

Symptoms of menopause

UK guidelines advise that we can diagnose your menopause without blood tests, however if we feel you do need a blood test then we will advise this before the consultation. 

 

  • Perimenopause symptoms include vasomotor symptoms and irregular periods.
  • Hot flushes, vaginal dryness and mood changes
  • No period for at least 12 months and are not using hormonal contraception
  • Menopause based on symptoms in women without a uterus
