This is an itchy skin rash that is caused by the skin invasion by the mite Sarcoptes scabei.
Transmission occurs by skin-to-skin contact. It is a common condition and can affect lots of people in the same household.
This can be direct (skin-to-skin contact) – which is the main route of transmission. And less commonly, indirect (through infested clothing, bedding).
Symptoms of scabies
- Lesions including – papules, vesicles, pustules, and nodules.
- Itchy all over the body
- Typically the itch can be worse after showering or bathing
- Sometimes there can be greyish white linear burrows on the finger webs, sides of the fingers, wrists and elbows.
Treatment of scabies
- Permethrin 5%
- Malathion 0.5% liquid
- Antihistamines
- Steroid creams
- Special creams to stop itching
