Threadworm
The adult worms reside in the colon with the female migrating to the anus when ready to lay eggs; this usually occurs at night when they cause an itchy anal area.
The eggs are transmitted by the faeco-oral route i.e. from the anal passage to your mouth by poor hygiene.
Symptoms of threadworm
The main symptoms are itching around the anal passage: especially in bed at night
You can scratch the area around your anus and then transfer the eggs to the mouth with contaminated hands.
This is how reinfection can occur, especially in children.
Treatment of threadworm
The whole family needs to be treated, even if they don’t have any symptoms
Mebendazole is the drug of choice
