A urinary tract infection (UTI) is the presence of infection in the bladder area and surrounding structures of the urinary tract.
This is more common in women, than in men
Symptoms of urinary tract infections
- Dysuria (burning and pain when urinating)
- Smelly urine
- Cloudy or bad smelling urine
- Frequent urinating
- The urge to urinate
- Feeling like you have not completely emptied your bladder
- Lower abdominal (stomach) pain
- Sudden development of incontinence – this usually occurs in elderly people
- Haematuria (blood in the urine)
- Bed wetting in children
- More serious symptoms of back pains, loin pains, fever and flank tenderness, can indicate an upper UTI
